Blencowes that served TNG project

Date 30 Nov 2023

Number of total entries 6,640

Number of ww1 entries completed 171

Number of ww2 entries completed 88

I have customised the Event/Attribute types and as of this date there are 629 such attributes, mostly I hope explanatory , but please let me know if a further explanation is required.

For each war two attributes are used;

  1. to set one the fact the person served and
  2. to provide a link to their personal (WordPress) page that details family background and life history,

An example used here to explain the entries standardisation

  • The year 1915 is the first year in which the person served
  • France and Belgium the  countries in which the person took part in combat or support services during combat
  • The descriptive ranks (progression) and military units served during the war

    • The year 1915 is the first year in which the person served
    • The link to their personal history page. Not these are not in the usual hyperlink underline format but click on the entry and it will take you to the page in your browser

It’s about a month now since I started to upload my gedcoms for the families that served in the two world wars and so from now on will try to blog monthly and reflect on where I am at in the project and some information about how to read the data in TNG and how it is has been recorded.

Firstly, I must point out that the most comprehensive information I have recorded for all individuals and their families is at the two WordPress websites accessible on the TNG home page. See banner image below for location of links

However, this information is enhanced by the events and attributes recorded in the TNG database, these allow a simplified timeline of events to be shown on the individual’s profile in TNG as well as key family links.

World War One is the initial phase of this project for two main reasons

  • It was the first WordPress project I started and the most complete.
  • The information about the service of many World War Two individuals is held in government record archives and is limited availability. This will change with time. For instance, Australia is in the process of making free the digitised records for all its Army service personnel.
Custom Events & Attributes

In order to show individual key events in the war, a large list of events had to be created and they fall into these main categories

  • Battles and key actions of the war
  • Regiments and Service Units served
  • Trenches – records time in the frontline when all too often men were killed or wounded on a level akin to the major battles of WW1 at least
  • Military actions like Transfers, Transportation, Promotions, and Postings.
  • Death detail is expanded to include how when and why, some took part long after the war and were recognised officially because of the war.
  • Wounding, Sickness and hospitalisation details
  • War recognition, includes medals, honours awarded and reasons for honourable discharge
Reports

Because of the power of the query-driven database, a number of custom reports will be developed to answer questions like “who in the family was at the Battle of Polygon Wood in 1917”. Many of these will for the first phase (WW1 ) be generated after completing the 500 or so individuals entered. Some reports are already created.

Note that with all of these reports above, they will contain more Blencowes as the data is entered.

Caution/Disclaimer

As the information is being entered into the database, errors, duplications are likely as the source of the information is recorded in several family trees online. I would be happy to have errors pointed out in say 6 months’ time when I think the WW1 project will far along and I have had time to sort out the initial gedcom data errors.

That’s the update for this month,  you will find the TNG home page is at https://blencowe.one-name.net/tng/index.php.
