The HMS Ganges-Training Ship came into service in 1779 and after active service, it was used as a boys’ residential training ship.  However, just before Frank Herbert joined in 1907 the boys had been moved ashore for their training.

The Medal roll indicates Frank was an Able Seaman and claimed the medals himself.

Frank stayed in service with the Royal Navy after the war and In 1927 Frank was awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for 20 years continuous service and good conduct.
