Jesse George Rose, Private, 4266469, 8th Infantry Brigade. 8th Div Company L
1918
- 6 August. Join the 8th Infantry at Camp Fremont, California. Late into the war, Jesse may have travelled overseas to travel to Siberia in Russia where an aborted attempt was made to support the anti-Communist forces of the Russian Revolution. It’s not clear who in the 8th Division went to Siberia and who didn’t.
Note: Major General Graves, with his staff, 5000 men, and 100 officers, transferred to Siberia in August 1918, and Major General Eli A. Helmick succeeded Graves in command of the division.
Note. The balance of the 8th Division went to Europe on 30 October 1918. The 8th Field Artillery Brigade, 8th Infantry Brigade, 16th Infantry Brigade headquarters, and the 319th Engineer Regiment were the only divisional units to go to France. The 13th and 62nd Infantry Regiments were at sea when recalled after the Armistice, and the 12th Infantry did not leave its pre-embarkation point at Camp Mills, New York, because it was quarantined for Spanish influenza. - 11 December. Quite why Jesse has discharged on this date is unknown but it may be he didn’t travel overseas at all and as a late draft was retained in US barracks until the end of the war.
Medals
Jesse may have had some medals if he travelled overseas but as it seems likely he didn’t he would have only received the US Victory Medal for his service.
