Hazel Blincoe
189?-1918
The most mysterious of all the Blencowe’s in World War 1, just one newspaper article published on two occasions in the Bardstown Kentucky Standard Sept 12 and November 14 of 1918.The announcement of local men who had fallen is identical in both editions.
After checking the Bardstown Census in 1900-1930 it appears just one Black family lived in the New Hope area of Nelson County. This family of Rowan (Rounds) Blincoe a day labourer contained 12 members in 1900 Census 10 members in the 1910 Census. Sadly no one named Hazel Blincoe is listed. However the following men from the Census for this family did receive Draft cards.
- William George Blinco(e) 13th Aug. 1883 Louisville City no 6, Kentucky. drafted 12 Sept 1918
- James F Blincoe 19 Oct 1887 Nelson County, Kentucky, drafted 5 Jun. 1917
Of these James F Blincoe appears in 1920 Census. William George Blinco(e) 1883 does not.
No further evidence for a Black soldier (Blincoe ) who died in 1918 is yet found and so this record is incomplete. the treatment in life and death of the Black Americans at that time means it seems that literally someone who gave their life for their country is not remembered.
