Royal Army Services Corps

Army Ordnance Corps
WW1

Blencowe (George) Harry 1892 Banbury, Sergeant, M2/098745, Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps.

Note;

Given Harry’s pre-war occupation, he was very probably involved in motor vehicle maintenance as was his brother James Aubrey.

Synopsis

We have the above photograph of Harry which is dated later 1918-1919 by virtue of the service chevrons on his arm indicating 4 years of service. he also has a cap badge of the Army Ordnance Corps AOC which we know he joined later in the war. The medal index card below indicates he was originally with the Army Service Corps ASC his service number begins M2 which designates Army Service Corps Motor Unit. All this makes perfect sense given his pre and post-war career as a motor mechanic. The medal card tells us he entered France on 10 August 1915 and was a Private initially with and promoted to Sergeant by war end

1914
  • Enlisted possibly in 1914 or early 1915 with ASC. .
1915
  • 10th Aug. Posted to France.

The photograph of Harry (above) looked at closely shows he is wearing 4 chevrons on the right sleeve indicating served a full four years overseas.

ASC comparison
A comparison of Cap badges with the ASC Sergeant left shows clearly this is not the ASC badge on Harry’s cap. Whereas the group of AOC men on right have what appears to be identical cap badges.

As suggested Harry doesn’t appear to be wearing an ASC cap badge.

wp4405e007_05_06The badge that appears be that on Harry’s cap is that of the Army Ordnance Corps. The Ordinance Corps did have men in France during the war and also were responsible for amongst other things the repair of large equipment and so it is possible this was a place where Harry could have been employed in an attached role. More records may in the future come to light to substantiate this or not

While we do not know what role Harry had on attachment to Army Ordnance Corps it’s likely Harry could have been in a supervisory role in a repair workshop. Note The AOC was responsible for the maintenance of the large plant.
