- Sons Harry served with the RGA, and John served with the Royal Navy. Brothers Arthur, Reuben and Edward served with the Ox and Bucks. Nephew Albert was killed with the Oxford and Bucks and Nephews William served with Royal Engineers, Thomas and Joseph with the DCLI. Brother Harry James served with Royal Fusiliers, 21st Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers, 13th Bn. Durham Light Infantry, Labour Corps. Brother Charles Albert served with the Canadian forces the 12th Bn. and 2nd Bn. Canadian Mounted Rifles, 13th Company E Bn. Heavy Section MGC/Tank Corps.

- Grand-son Ronald William was killed with the RASC in North Africa, Sons Edward served with the Royal Garrison Artillery, Ernest served with the Parachute Regiment and Harold served with the Royal Artillery. Grand-son William John Henry was with the Anti Tank Regiment .

- 26th Nov. Enlisted as a Territorial soldier with 4th Reserve Bn. Oxford and Bucks LI. Lied about age given as 44 yrs of age (ie b. 1870). Occupation Painter. Address at enlistment 6 Boxhedge Square Banbury. Put on National Reserves Nov 1914.
1915
- Early 1915 Lake near Okehampton. The conditions for an older man were tough and constant soaking causing shoulder pains for John.
1916
- 29th Apr. Transferred to 251 Protection Company, Royal Defence Corps The Protection Companies were mainly engaged in guarding work – POW (P/W) Camps, Vulnerable Points (Docks etc.), Ireland, and M.I. and Special Military Areas (Govt, Camps, Munitions etc). A total of 27,000 men were employed as such in 1918. 300 Pro. Coy. was a reserve company.
1917
- 19th Jun. Posted to 300 protection Company a reserve company of the RDC.
- 10th Jul. Medical report at Littlemoor Camp. Myalgia
- 3rd Aug. Discharged at Weymouth, KR 392 no longer physically fit for service on account of Rheumatism arthritis.
Note: By the end of 1917 all four brothers had been honourably discharged and were all living within a few paces of each other see the map of Banbury with their homes denoted. By 1927 Reuben was Edwards, next door neighbour,
