Blinco Randolph Joseph,1893, Langley, Sapper, 3594,151379, 901728, 239326, WR-265258, 245258, Royal Field Artillery, Royal Engineers
1915
- 21st Nov. Randolph enlisted at Slough, His regimental number 3594, with the Royal Field Artillery Reserve. Occupation: Railway Servant.
1916
- 19th Jul. He was mobilised and posted to No. 7 Artillery School, Home address given as 5 Albany Place Greys Rd Slough. At this point, the RHA is indicated as the regiment and a number 151379 later to be 901728.
1917-1918
- Jan. 1917. Randolph transferred to the Royal Engineers and was given the number 239326 initially.
- 23rd Feb. Posted to 261 Railway Company Royal Engineers.
- 27th Feb. Embarked to France with 261 Railway Company. The 261st Coy was a construction company building new track and facilities. The introduction of additional construction companies into the war was part of a plan introduced by Sir Eric Geddes to double the BEF capacity to deliver ammunition etc to the increased battlefronts of 1917.
Note: No 239325 an Edward Bailey has service records that indicate his transfer at this date and embarkation to France in February 1917. E. Bailey service records also indicate he was with the 261 Railway Company of the REs. Also on the same Roll list is Thomas Cassidy WR265257 joined the RE in 28th Jan. 1917 he was posted to 261 Coy on 23 Feb 1917. The 261 Coy embarked 27th Feb 1917 for France and Flanders service until 2 March 1919. It’s highly likely that this was Randolph’s unit too.
- Nov. The 261st Coy appear to have been in the Ypres area in this month as evidenced by the death of one of its company; AC Wathen 239335 30/11/1917 .2
1918
- In 1918 his regimental number was changed to WR/265258 (E. Bailey to WR/265325) a prefix indicating that Randolph was with a RE Waterways and Railway unit.
Original reads: ‘THE BRITISH ADVANCE IN THE WEST. Railway engine in difficulties.’] digital.nls.uk/74545970
1919
- Based on the service records of other 261 Coy. Men, he was returned to England in February 1919.
- It seems he was transferred to the Catterick Camp Railway, Royal Engineers.
Map fof the railway system of the Camp plus a Third Class ticket for trip from Catterick Bridge to the Camp - 19 August-1 September. A record of an R. Blinco born 1893 Sapper Royal Engineers appears in records of Medical Records of Catterick Camp Military Hospital: The only bit that doesn’t fit is his serial number given is 245258. He is with Military Camp railway (presumably Catterick Camp) and his medical complaint Sebaceous cyst of neck. It seems on discharge from the hospital he went on a walkabout.
- Sept.
Randolph was still in the Army (albeit it seems reluctant) in September 1919 as a newspaper reported AWOL on 27th Sep 1919 Slough, Eton & Windsor Observer.
