H.M.S. Maidstone was completed to navy order as a depot ship in 1912.
HMS Lucia of the 10th Submarine Flotilla at South Bank, Tees. The Lucia, which had been the German ship Spreewal, had been captured by the British and converted in 1916. It served during World War One as a submarine depot ship.
HMS Dolphin
HMS Dolphin was a shore base for submarines.
Notes: This extract gives an idea of the duty that the Submarine Depot Base ships were on – On the 30-7-1914 HMS Vulcan departed Dundee with HMS Alecto, C19 and C21 and were based in Newcastle. She would carry out sweeps for U-boats as far south as Flamborough Head and Tees Bay, sometimes she would be away from Newcastle for up to 3 days. After the German battle cruisers attacked Yarmouth HMS Alecto departed Newcastle. on the 7-11-1914 C20. C19 and C21 went south to Immingham and were with HMS Forth. The Humber was considered to be the next possible target for the German battlecruisers. These 3 subs remained with HMS Forth until leaving for Leith on 19-1-1915, arriving there the next day. Only now were they back with Vulcan.
