Blincow Joseph Frederick, 1881, West Bromwich, Private, 18430, 96th Training Reserve Bn. 300 RDC Protection Coy.
The oldest brother of the family is the only one to retain the spelling Blincow versus Blincoe
The 96th Training Bn. was Hampshire-based. Formerly the 16th (Reserve) Battalion: formed in Portsmouth in September 1915 as a Reserve battalion. Moved to Chisledon in January 1916. September 1916: converted into 96th Training Reserve Battalion of 22nd Reserve Brigade.
Just one record found that shows a J. F. Blincow being transferred in 1917 from the 96th Training Reserve Bn. to the 300 RDC Protection Coy. Weymouth and this would have been a POW camp guard role or something like that.

These roles were often filled by older men or those medically classified unfit for overseas service. Joseph Frederick Blincow fits this description and the fact that 4 brothers served makes it even more likely that it was him in this role.
A check of all suitably qualified J. F. Blincow’s (and other spellings) finds no other candidate. The only doubt that is raised is both the Regiments are based in Hampshire, but men were sent to other areas on enlistment, especially after 1916.
A home-based role like the one above wouldn’t have generated in most cases a medal and no records are found.
