WW1
Blincow Richard Frederick Cyril, 1900, Tipton, 51st (Graduated) Bn. Hampshire Regiment.
Synopsis
Fred’s son Peter provided me with the details of his father’s service, a complicated story, a wounding not in battle. Fred had been too late to join his battalion in the last months of the war but instead was to go to Germany as part of the Army of Occupation, but a training ground accident had devastating results for presumably other new recruits to the battalion. With Peters’s knowledge, I don’t think I would ever got the details of his service. Peter passed away shortly after conveying what his father had done, and I didn’t get a chance to ask him about his WW2 service a great pity.
1915-1916
Railway Jnr. Clerk employee from 8 Jul 1915 until resigned 30 Dec 1916.
1917
- Enlisted in 1917, the evidence is a photograph of Fred in uniform dated that year.
- Up until 27 October 1917, the battalion was known as the 281st Graduated Battalion and had no regimental affiliation. Before that, it had been the 93rd Battalion of the Training Reserve. A training unit based at Canterbury, it was part of the 201st Brigade in the 67th Division.
1918
- The Battalion moved to Foxhall Heath (Ipswich) in March 1918.
- Arrived on the Western Front (most likely as the war was ending) and was involved in a training accident, son Peter explains in this letter.
- Invalided to England. Fred was to go to Germany with the regiment in their role as an Army of Occupation but was shortly to be invalided home. Instead, he ended up at Summerdown Convalescents Army Camp at Grove Rd. Eastbourne. The following four photos from the Summerdown Camp from the website delcamp.net give some idea of this period in Fred’s life.
1919
Movements of the Hampshire Regiment in 1919
- While Fred was not with the battalion, they went to Germany on 19th Mar. 1919 to the Cologne Bridgehead.
-
