468th Coy Labour Corps

WW1

Alfred William Blinko,, 1873, Beaconsfield, Private 316728, 468th Home Services Employment Coy. Labour Corps.

Willie’s only record found is the absent Voters list from 31 London End Beaconsfield. A Butcher in Beaconsfield he would have been at the start of the war a tad old and also in an exempt occupation. However, with the passage of time, he was likely conscripted or volunteered for the Labour Corps. He joined the 468th HSE Coy in 1917 or later and as such was based at home, hence no medal card exists.

1917
  • The Labour Corps is renumbered to 6 digit numbers to eliminate duplication and this is why we know Willie joined after January 1917 when this renumbering took place. As a Butcher, it may be that Willie was employed in the preparation of meat for Army consumption at one of the Labour Corps depots.

We do not have a record where Mercer was stationed but the ASC butchers were allocated to Army units. This Photo from the Royal Engineer's collection at IWM and shows Butchers Shop, No. 4, Stationary Hospital, Arques. © IWM (Q 28920)
Army butchery was a large scale operation in many of the Regiments.

  • Bucks Absent Voters List 1918, Address 31 London End. It is assumed that Alfred was away from home at an Army base /depot in the UK.

It would seem that the Blinko Butchers on London End Beaconsfield was to close as both Willie and Bertram were conscripted . Both brothers not returning to work as Butchers after the war it seems from the later records.

1938

It seems from brothers probate record of this year that Willie was no longer in Butchery and was said to be a Corporation worker. In 1939 Census Willie is living with Rosina at 1 Grove Terrace  Weymouth  Occupation Labourer general

Death 1956 age 83 years
