1916
  • 2 March. Enlisted, volunteered for the Territorial Army.
  • 29 September. Called up and posted to 2/5th Essex Regiment. Occupation Waiter living at 85 Cattell Rd, Small Heath Bham. Appointed to the Essex Regiment. Posted to the 2/5th Essex Regiment.
  • The 2/5th Essex Regiment was  aterritorial Army unit so Frederick a conscripted man was posted to a voluntary Army Bn.
  • July 1916.The  2/5th Bn  moved to Harrogate.

Note: In May 1916 before Frederick joined the battalion, the 2/5th Battalion was deployed to France as part of the 206th Brigade in the 69th (2nd East Anglian) Division. However Frederick was Territorial soldier, and this stage of the war not compelled to join the battalion in France.

It would appear that Frederick a territorial did not join the 2/5th in France but stayed in home base located at Warley Barracks in Warley, near Brentwood, Essex. At some point close to being dispatch in 1918 to France he was transferred to the 30th Bn London Regiment however then transferred to the Royal Engineers shortly after.
