- A Quartermaster at the Banbury Hospital Marjorie is in this group photograph below, dated 1918. Marjorie is on the far right of the middle row. Staff and Patients at Banbury Red Cross Hospital 1918. Harry Brain and other wounded/sick patients and the nursing staff in the Red Cross Hospital, West Street, Grimsbury, Banbury, Oxon – See more at: http://www.europeana1914-1918.eu/en/contributions/4236#pretty Photo From Keith Brain 2020, “This old photo was taken in 1918 or 1919. It was taken in the grounds of the Wesleyan Chapel (as it then was- now a Methodist Church)) in West Street, Grimsbury when it was a Red Cross VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) Hospital for wounded from the Great War. It was generally for the less seriously wounded who needed to convalesce. My grandfather, Harry Brain of Calthorpe Street, is in the back row 5th from the left. He served in the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars and was shot in the leg during the German spring offensive in March 1918. The bullet was never removed. More Banbury men are likely pictured in this photo and, unlikely as it might be, if anyone recognises their ancestor I would love to hear from them. Lest we forget.

Medals
Awarded the Red Cross Medal, (photograph of the actual medal supplied by relative Peter Blencowe. a 1st cousin once removed)
Note: The medal was awarded to members of the British Red Cross or its voluntary aid detachments who served in the UK between 4 August 1914 and 31 December 1919 and were therefore not eligible for British military medals. Those who were eligible had to undertake at least 1,000 hours of unpaid service or be ambulance drivers and bearers who gave 500 hours unpaid service. No diploma was issued with the medal and it was not an official decoration. Between 41,000 and 42,000 were awarded.
After the War
1917-1929
Note: It would seem in 1917 the Reverend Charles Edward Blencowe moved into the Marston House (inherited from his brother J A Blencowe) So about this time Marjorie now serving in Banbury and Cecilia would have moved into the House as well. Willie in 1919 discharged from the Canadian Army would have been next and while Arthur could have moved in during a leave period in the war likely his full-time residence was in 1921 when discharged.

Marjorie

From Charlie 692 member of the great war forum “Well done for your site.
I have, by chance, a few photos of Marjorie Blencowe’s VAD hospital at Banbury. As I understand it it was in the family home. I note you have no named photo of Marjorie but do have some of her brothers.
I thought you might like to check these few out and see if one or other of them is Marjorie and her parents. These photos were taken 1917 or 1918 I think.
Charlie”
