Blencowe George Edward, 1896, Rugby, Private, 10954, Royal Army Medical Corps.

1914

The regimental number indicates a 1914 enlistment and from other information, we surmise he was a Territorial recruit. Two medal cards refer to same Regiment Number 10954 one for a G.E. Blencowe one for E.E.Blencowe. Note he was known as Edward (and called Ted by the family) in 1911 Census.

1915
  • 13th May, Landed in France, possibly to take up service with the 4th Field Ambulance, RAMC. (Found regimental serial number 10953 with service records who initially joined the 4th London Field Ambulance and landed in France in a similar time frame). This evidence is weak for Ted being with and then staying the entire war with the 4th FA. and in any event, men were regularly transferred depending on workload between units. However it’s useful to look at the record of the 4th FA as it demonstrates the extent of travel and active battle support such Field Ambulances experienced.

4th Field Ambulance 1915-1918

4th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps was part of 2nd Division when war broke out in August 1914. 2nd Division was one of the first formations to proceed to France with the BEF in August 1914, they remained on the Western Front throughout the war. It took part in most of the major actions. In 1914 they were in action in The Battle of Mons and the subsequent retreat, The Battle of the Marne, The Battle of the Aisne, the Actions on the Aisne Heights and First Battle of Ypres. They took part in the Winter Operations 1914-15 and saw action at the Battle of Festubert. 4th Field Ambulance RAMC transferred to the Guards Division on the 19th of August 1915. They were in action in The Battle of Loos.where the 2nd Division sustained over 700 men killed and many more wounded of course.  In 1916 they fought on The Somme in The Battle of Flers-Courcelette and The Battle of Morval, capturing Lesboeufs.

In 1917 they were in action in the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the Third Battle of Ypres and The Battle of Cambrai. In 1918 they fought on The Somme, during the Battles of the Hindenburg Line, The pursuit to the Selle, The Battle of the Selle and the Battle of the Sambre. At the Armistice they were near Maubeuge and were then ordered to the Rhine, crossing the German frontier on the 11th of December. the Guards Division began to return to England on the 20th of February 1919 and had all returned home by the 29th of April 1919. 1

1919
  • 14th Jan. Ted was dismissed Class B; unfit to serve further indicating poor health and army termination of any Territorial service commitment.
Medals
G.E. Blencowe Medal Card gives little information; Victory and British medals awarded which means Edward served overseas. Edward was likely a stretcher bearer and or ambulance driver, horses giving way to motorised transport as the war progressed. E.E. Blencowe Medal Card. This medal card indicates entry to France was 13 May 1915This card also specifies the 1914-15 Star.
