• 4^th -27^th Oct. 1917 Enlisted at Martins Ferry Ohio.(age 23 yrs 6/12 months) with the 158^th Depot Brigade (same depot as brother Howard)
• 28^th Oct. Transferred to Coy E. 146^th Inf. 73^rd Infantry Bde, 37^th Div. Training begins through winter and spring at Camp Sheridan.

1918

• 19^th Apr. Robert Appointed Cook for the “ E” Company.¹
• 20^th May. the Div moves to Camps Lee and Upton and then proceeds to the ports of embarkation of Baltimore, Brooklyn, Hoboken, Montreal, Newport News, New York, and Philadelphia.²
• 6-15^th Jun. The 73^rd Inf. Bde. embark for France.²

• 18-27^th Jun. Land at Brest. Initially, the 37^th Div was placed under the command of the French 8^th Army.²
• 22^nd Jul. The 37^th Div moves to the vicinity of Baccarat in the Vosges.²
• 4^th -16^th Sept. Baccarat Sector (Lorraine). 37^th Div moves to the sector and begins patrolling.²
• 23^rd -25^th Sept. Avocourt Sector (Lorraine). 37^th Div relieves portions of the 79^th and 91^st Divs. on the main line of resistance in the rear of a front which extends northeast of Avocourt in the Bois d’Avocourt, along the northern outskirts of Avocourt, north of u, and prepares for Meuse-Argonne Operation.²
• 26^th -30^th Sept, Meuse-Argonne Offensive. 37^th Div, in the centre of the V Corps, attacks from the front line of the Avocourt Sector toward Cierges and Remonville, and reaches the northern edge of the Bois de Montfaucon, the Tranchbede Montfaucon south-west of Montfaucon, the road from Montfauconto Ivoiry west of Montfaucon, south of Ivoiry.²

• 28-29^th Sept. 37^th Div. attacks and advanced 11 Km., capturing Baulny, Epinonville, Septsarges and Dannevoux by the evening of the 28th. ³

• 30^th-32^nd Sept. The 32^nd Div relieves the 37^th which concentrates near Recicourt.
• Oct. The 37^th and 91^st Divisions were sent to Belgium during October to assist the Group of Armies of Flanders, and late in the month attacked near Audenarde and made important gains.
• 3^rd Oct. Div. moves to Pagny-sur-Meuse and the vicinity.
• 7-16^th Oct. Div. Occupies the Pannes Sector (Lorraine). Div. relieves the 89^th Div on the front from northeast of Jaulny, along the northern edge of the Bois de la Montagne, the northern edge of the Bois de Charey, Fme de Champ-Fontaine, to the southern corner of the Etang de Lachaussee; patrolling follows.
• 26^th Oct. Div moves by stages to the vicinity of Thielt and Meulebeke (Belgium).
• 30^th Oct – 4^th Nov. Ypres-Lys Operation.

• 29/30^th Oct. Nights of Oct 29/30^th and Oct 30/31^th, Div relieves the Fr 132^rdDiv along the Courtrai-Ghent railroad between Waalesstraat and Vossenhol.
• 31^st Oct. The  37^th Division advanced against hostile artillery and machine-gun
  f ire about 21/2 miles to the western outskirts of Cruyshautem where it dug in
  for the night.⁴ The position in the heights west of Cruyshautem between De Biest and Hoogemolen.
• 1^st Nov. When the attack was resumed on November 1 it became evident that the Germans were making retirement and the 37^th and 91^st Divisions pushed
  forward rapidly. The 37^th Division advanced about 5 miles to the Escaut River,
  reaching it near Eyne and Heurne.⁴ The Div. reaches the Scheldt River between Eyne and Meerschkant.
• 2^nd– 4^th Nov. Early on November 2 the 37^th Division forced a crossing of the river southeast of Heurne under heavy fire, the infantry improvising a bridge from trees felled near the riverbank. The river at this point is canalized and is about 100 feet wide with steep banks about eight feet high. That night the engineers of the division erected footbridges at Heuvel and Eyne upon which more troops crossed. A German attack against the bridgehead position launched about 17:00Hrs on November 4 was repulsed.⁴
• 4^th Nov. Fr 12th Div relieves the Div which moves to the Thielt Area for rest.

• 5-11^th Nov. Ypres-Lys Operation.
  • 8^th Nov. Div moves to the front east of Heuvel, Syngem, and Asper.
  • 10^th Nov. Div passes through elements of the Fr 11th and Fr 12th Divs along the line from Meerschkant, through Groot- Meersch, to Klein-Meersch, attacks east, crosses the Scheldt River against enemy opposition at Heuvel and Hermelgem, occupies Nederzwalm, and gains the region north of Hermelgem east of the river near Grootenberg.
  • 11^th Nov. Armistice. Patrols occupy Munckzwalm, Hundelgem, Zwarten-Broek, Dickele, Bouchaute Fme and reach the crossroad 800 m south-west of Keerken.
