Blinco Sydney Joseph, 1897, Barrow, Pioneer, 319321, Royal Engineers.

1916
  • Based on Regimental numbering, Sydney enlisted in about May 1916 (No. 319365 Attested 1st June 1916). Sydney’s number also indicates he wasn’t in any of the RE’s Railways companies as they had numbers that started with a WR.
  • It appears that Sydney went overseas (likely France) but was not in a theatre of war. Proof of this, the award of British war medal only.  We can only assume his role was somehow a base depot assignment well away from the battlefield.
  • The Royal Engineers organisation was colossal with 500,000 men serving, Sydney because of a lack of records its unlikely that it will be possible to determine the RE unit he served with.
1919
  • It’s likely that Sydney was discharged in1919.
Medals

BWM1
The Medal card indicates a British medal only awarded which indicates that Sydney was in service but didn’t enter a theatre of war during 1914-1918. Name is spelt Blenco on Medal Card and Medal roll.
