Blincoe Edward Harold, 1891, Rochdale, Gunner, 72083, Royal Garrison Artillery, No. 2 Depot.

1915
  • 9th Dec. Enlisted unit is unknown. The RGA 2 Depot, most likely his last unit in the war. RGA No.2 Depot was based in Preston at the time. Reviewing the surviving records of men enlisted in Dec 1915 to 2 Depot it seems they have been sent at various times in 1916-1917 to the front and with different units and so we can only guess that this was what happened to Edward. He most certainly served as a Gunner with an RFA Artillery Battery. He was probably returned to No.2 Depot when he became sick. So far no knowledge of where on the front he served.

60 pounder guns of the RGA in action in France The Royal Garrison Artillery The RGA were equipped with much larger weapons than the RFA. Howitzers from 6″ and 9″ bore were common as were 60 Pounder heavy field guns. These weapons became the first to be hauled by motor tractors rather than horse power. Some of the guns were so large that they could only be deployed on railway tracks.
