Synopsis

Its likely that Walter didnt go to the front during the war , there is no medal card and this is a good indicator he was UK based during this period. Note the 3rd Bn  Monmouth Regiment was disbanded in 1916 and the men of it moved to other battalions of the Regiment. Without records its not possible to know when Walter joined up but he wouldnt have been a Lieutenant without having served some time so it must have been before the 1916 disbandment (he gives the 3rd as his battalion in 1918 and by then it didnt exist). So my speculation is he joined in 1914-15 and in 1916 posted to the the Remounts depot at Ormskirk in lancashire where he was an officer in this Horse training/supply facility.

1916

The anouncement of his engagement to Marion in itself shows he was in England and had served long enough to get a promotion to Lieut.
