  • 9 March. Reported for duty at Gibraltar Barracks , Northampton with the 2nd Northampton Regiment  and on the 11th posted to the No 2 labour Company of that Regiment.

Notes: The 2nd Bn Northamptonshire Regiment were on the western front at this time.

Most likely excused from service until 1917 on age or occupation but 9th March 1917 is called up having enlisted mid-1916. At this time wife Kate living at 27 Somerset St, Northampton.

Initially transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment in March 1917 he was transferred to 140th Labour Coy in May. Several Postings to different Labour companies occurred and one wonders if given the need his trade of boot making or repair was utilised in these organisations.

  • 24 March. Transported to join the 2nd Bn near the Hindenburg Line in France.
  • 14 May. The Labour Companies of the Army Regiments were formed into a new organisation the Labour Corps. On this day Charles was agiven a new number 83478 and his company rename No 140 company Labour.Corps.
1918
  • 26 March. Transferred to No 930 Company Labour Corps . Note: In March 1918, the No. 930 Labour Corps was located in Northern France, specifically around the areas of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Wimereux, and Étaples. These locations were key logistical hubs where the Labour Corps provided essential support. This reinforces my thoughts that Charles was performing his trade of Boot Laster in the Army and sent to a more general repair shop behind the lines
