Thomas Clements Private 204061 1/4th Dorset Regt.

Note: Some fragments of Thomas Pension records exist which along with medal card give the 1/4th Dorsets as his only Regiment. It should be noted that on 23 February 1916 the 1/4th Dorsets landed at Basra with 42nd Indian Brigade and remained in Mesopotamia for the rest of the war.

1915

Thomas may have applied earlier to join up in 1915,  a later document gives address in 1915 as Uxbridge Rd. Stoke Poges Buckinghamshire.

1917
  • 23 June- Thomas Attests at Cowley Barracks Oxford and this is signed signed by an officer of Oxon and Bucks Regiment.
  • Thomas is posted to I/4th Dorsetshire Regiment Depot and at unreadable location but must have either been in Mesopotamia or there shortly after.

  • 27-28th Sept. “In late September 1917 they played a decisive part in the battle of Ramadi on the Euphrates, capturing with two Gurkha battalions the ridge that dominated the Turkish position.  The 1/4th‘s part in this success was specifically mentioned in the official despatch. ” Casualties 27 killed.
    • The 12th and 42nd Indian Brigades swung left to the Euphrates Valley Canal between the Euphrates and Lake Habbaniyah.They secured the dam across the canal by 15:00 on 28 September.Their advance in the intense heat was made possible by a water supply chain that Brooking had established using 350 Ford vans, which transported over 63,000 litres (14,000 gallons) of water on 28 September alone.
    • At 09:15, large numbers of Turks began surrendering to the Garhwalis at the bridge; by 09:30, as the rest of the British force advanced towards the mud walls of Ramadi, “white flags went up all along the enemy’s line”.By 11:00 the Turkish commander, Ahmed Bey, and the rest of the garrison had surrendered.

1918
  • 23rd March 1918, the Dorsets played a leading part in capturing Khan Baghdadi, where 5,000 Turks were taken prisoner.
1919
  • 10th October discharged medically unfit graded 90% disability and Army pension granted. Home still registered as Uxbridge Rd Stoke Poges.
1919
  • At the end of the war a draft from the 1/4th was sent to Salonika while the rest of the Battalion returned to England for demobilisation.
After the War
1929

Thomas remarries in Stoke Poges to Florence Overshott. Not sure if a Widower or not.
