William George Dandy A/Cpl 56422, Royal Army Medical Corps.

1915
  • 27th February enlisted at Worcester
  • 7th August posted overseas to the Balkans

We do not have any clues to Williams RAMC role, the date of 7th August as the date of entry into the field of combat in the Balkans makes highly likely he was to take part in the Gallipoli Campaign.

Gallipoli 1915 The Blencowes who took part in the Suvla Operations are shown landing on this map and where they ended up. Private William Blencowe 1635 a territorial soldier of the 1/4th Bn Cheshire Regiment landed on the 19th Sept a month after his battalion had landed. The 1/7th Cheshire’s landed at Suvla on 9th August, but on 10th August they and other units of 159th Brigade and 158th Brigade (53rd Division) were involved in an assault on Scimitar Hill. The War Diary records that the Battalion ‘suffered somewhat severely’ he was, therefore, most likely a reinforcement for the Bn. William survived to go on to Palestine and to France before the war ended..

Salonica Field Hospital

After the evacuation of Gallipoli, we do not know what happened to William, except to say he became a radio repairman by 1939 (was this as a result of Army signals training? in WW1). It is also notable that he died very young 41 and this could have been as a result of war injuries/sickness.

Medals

William was awarded the 1914-15 Star for his service in 1915 in the Balkans. In addition, he received the British War medal and the Victory medal
