  • 18 January. Attested at Guelph occupation driver.
  • 26 February embarked from Canada  disembarked on 16 January at Plymouth with the 11th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Divisional Artillery.
  • 9 November. No 2 Canadian General Hospital Le Treport-reported with deafness

1917
  • February.  Located at Mt St Eloi and generally in the Vimy area. Regular front line exchanges reported.
  • April. Took part in the battle Vimy Ridge. The 43rd Howitzer Battery was part of the Carscallen’s  Group that bombarded Swischen Stellung in a creeping barrage to enable infantry to move againt the trench system. See war diary of attack day see war diary and barrage map below. Swischen Stellung was the old German trench system that was very quickly overwhelmed

  • 5 May. In a reorganisation, the 43rd Battery is placed with the 8th Brigade

Note: In July 1917,  James died of wounds at a Casualty Clearing Station  we cannot with certainty pinpoint the day he was fatally wounded. However, the 8th Bde War Diary and the data of men killed in the 8th Bde shows some possibilities for the location and timing.

  • 1 July. War diary indicates the 43rd Battery in action at map ref. s.30.b.50.95 of map 51c N.E. near the hamlet of Hamelincourt. One man Gnr VANT W 307652 reported on 2nd June Kia but shown as 31 May in CWGC. On the 9th June Lt E P Black 43rd Bty. died of wounds and so at least three casualties in this period and at this location.
  • 8 July. Died of wounds No 6 Casualty Clearing Station which was located at Bruay some 45 km to the northeast.
