Synopsis

There were two Victor George Blinco(e)s that served with the Suffolk Regiment in WW1 and beyond. Until the 1921 census was released this was not noted. This record for Victor George Blinco comes from the the1921 census. Placing him in India his birthplace as High Wycombe and thus gives definite proof this is RIN [4664].  We have only a Medal Card for this Victor but it does show he qualified for the British war medal the Victory medal and a medal for the campaign in India. I suspect Victor may have lied about his age and joined underage probably in 1915-16. He was sent to the Balkans and fought the Bulgarians. In 1920 he was sent to India and served most of the rest of his service there going to Gibraltar before his discharge in 1925.

Victor served in WW2. As with his earlier service in WW1, his WW2 service only became apparent with the publishing of the Royal Engineer slips on to Find my Past website. His discharge in 1946 age 46 along with the birth of a daughter in 1942 suggests that he served in the UK during the war and the immediate post-war period.

1915

On the 19th of October 1915 orders were received to prepare to sail and on the 24th they left Marseilles for Alexandria in Egypt, all units (with the exception XXXI and CXLVI Brigades RFA) arrived the by 22nd of November

  • The division went on to Salonika on the 4th of January 1916.
  • Later in the year, they were in action during the occupation of Mazirko and the capture of Barakli Juma.
1917
  • In 1917 they were involved in the capture of Ferdie and Essex Trenches (near Barakli Jum’a) and then the capture of Barakli and Kumli.
1918
  • In mid-1918 a number of units returned to France The remainder of the Division was later in action at the Battle of Doiran and the pursuit of the Strumica valley. When Hostilities with Bulgaria ceased at the end of September the 28th Division was in the area of Trnovo. They moved in early November to Gallipoli and occupied the Dardanelles Forts.
1919-1925
  • 19 Jun 1921 recorded at Ridge Barracks, Jubbulpore, a key railroad junction. Sent to respond to the Malabar Uprising.

Royal Engineers

Victor George Blinco, Private, 14616280, Royal Engineers

Victor appears to have rejoined the war effort at age about 40 and served with the Royal Engineers until June 1946 as this RE record shows, I suspect because of age etc he served in the UK possibly in some way related to his Post Office role . He would have been discharged in 1946 as the post war needs slowed down and in any event likley had his service count towards his Post Office (then civil service employment) pension.

Medals

If I am correct about UK based service then Victor entitled to Defence Medal

The Defence Medal

1942 Living in Hertford as indicated by the birth of a third son Keith. This further support that at least in 1941 he was based in the UK.
