Curiously in this census gives Ireland as the birthplace, in contrast, army enlistment forms indicate Bermondsey. The Merchant Navy ID card see later gives his Foster Mother as Sarah Goldswaine of 116 Snaregate Dover which the same street recorded  on enlistment in 1916

Occupation: Carman, Birthplace: Bermondsey, Middlesex.

  • 21st Jan. Volunteered for ‘The Buffs’ was living at 72 Snargate St Dover. Join the territorials and immediately signed up to waive his rights to home service and to go overseas. Interestingly at attestation, he is accepted as medically fit to serve.
  • 4th Feb. A second medical examination discovers a deformed limb and he is discharged due to a deformed right arm, unfit to serve. Note: Percy died within three years of discharge.

A merchant Seamans ID Card features Percy’s only photo we have. It also give a key relationship a foster/step mother in Kent. We do not know when he joined the Merchant Navy
