SYNOPSIS

The oldest of four brothers to serve on the Western Front all four entered later in the war, William in 1916 but Herbert, Alfred and Fred arrived there in mid 1917. While William was decorated with the DCM and discharged early in 1917 (wounded or sick). The other brothers were blessed with some luck and seem to have survived without serious injury. The Medal Roll indicates Alfred was with the 2/5th Essex Regiment Battalion initially .

Herbert was with the 11th Bn. Fusiliers who were part of the 54th Brigade, 18th Division when wounded.1

    • The objectives of the 54th Brigade included Glencorse Wood and the high ground. The assaulting battalions formed up on the tape without being observed by the enemy, and at zero hour— 4.35 a.m. attacked.2
    • On the right the Fusiliers pushed ahead with little difficulty until the right company came under heavy machine-gun fire from Inverness Copse and Dumbarton Lakes, and eased off to the left. 2
    • From an officer of the Fusiliers ” The barrage opened at dawn, and the men got away very well. They got well on into Glencorse Wood, and on the open ground some of ‘ D ‘ Company, including Captain Gray, got right up to Fitzclarence Farm. Unfortunately, the battalion on our right did not get on at all. Our men were caught by a very heavy enfilade machine-gun fire in consequence, and soon afterwards the Bosche came out from Inverness Copse in strong force and got almost in rear of ‘ C ‘ Company, our support company. 1
    • By 6 a.m. all the officers of the Fusilier attacking companies were casualties, and a heavy counter-attack was launched by the enemy from Inverness Copse on our right.1
    • Repeated enemy counter-attacks were made from Nonne Bosschen Wood (to the Bedfordshire Regiment’s left front), but our artillery dealt effectively with these. More serious was the position in Glencorse Wood, where, owing to the Fusiliers having been pushed back, the enemy were able to push through in good numbers.1
    • By this time the Fusiliers were withdrawing from their advanced posts, and a line was established 200 yards east of Clapham Junction.1

Note 1. The attack of 10 August 1917 intended to secure objectives not gained in the original 31 July battle was spearheaded by 18th (Eastern) Division, supported on the left by the 25th Division. The attacking troops were subject to intense shelling as they went over, 25th Division made early progress and occupied Westhoek; 18th Division’s 54th Brigade got into Glencorse Wood, but 55th Brigade was severely held up in Inverness Copse; the assault battalions were isolated from reinforcements and supplies by accurate German shelling and in the afternoon enemy counter-attacks recovered most of the British gains. Despite many British casualties this major assault accomplished merely the occupation of Westhoek and an advance of around 450 yards to the north and south of that village.

1918

  • 21st Dec. Discharged.
