Blencowe Fred, 1890, Banbury, Private, unknown, 109thTR.Bn., Kings Royal Rifle Corps.

Only two records were found for Fred in the Army. This from the Soldiers’s Effects records of his dead brother confirms that on 12th May 1917 he was with the 109th Training Battalion of the KRRC with brother Valentine.

The Soldiers Effects Sheet for brother Alfred KIA 1916 shows Thomas was left nine pounds from his war payments The sheet confirms 16th Aug. Died three days after being wounded and at the No 3. The Soldiers Effects Sheet for brother Alfred KIA 1916 shows Fred was left six pounds 7 shillings from his war payments.
The sheet confirms 16th Aug. Died three days after being wounded and at the No 3. Casualty Clearing Station at Puchevillers. Effects left to:

  • Sisters Sarah Smith, Rose Barrett, Lottie Lowe.
  • Brother Pte Valentine c/o O.C. 109th Kings Rifles Bn Wimbledon.
  • Brother Thomas
  • Brother Pte Fred Blencowe c/o O.C.109th Kings Rifles Bn Wimbledon
  • Mrs May R Blencowe sister-in-law

The second record for Fred is his marriage announcement on the 8th February 1917 in the Banbury Advertiser.Cherry Blencowe marriage 1917.JPG

There are no medal records (which for nearly all British soldiers who served overseas exist) so we can postulate that maybe Fred was either discharged unfit to serve or was home-based given his clerical occupation. Possibly he was in Army administration for the duration. The 109th Training Battalion appear to have been based in England the entire war period and training on Wimbledon Common for a part of that time.
